Why Live in Carleton Place?

Carleton Place gives you something a little different from Ottawa’s suburbs. It still has a real small-town centre and its own identity, but it has also grown considerably as more people look west for additional space and value.

The older part of Carleton Place around the historic downtown and the Mississippi River has the character people often picture when they think of a traditional Ontario town — older homes, mature streets, local shops, restaurants and the river running right through the community.

At the same time, there are plenty of newer neighbourhoods and developments around the edges of town, giving buyers options if they prefer newer construction, modern layouts and more suburban-style streets.

One of the big attractions is space. Depending on your budget, Carleton Place can sometimes give you more house, a larger lot or newer construction than you might find closer to central Ottawa.

The trade-off is the commute. Carleton Place is outside Ottawa, so where you work and how often you need to be in the city matters. Access to Highway 7 makes the drive toward Kanata and Ottawa fairly straightforward, but it’s still something I’d factor into the decision before choosing the house.

That’s why I think Carleton Place works best for someone who genuinely likes the idea of living in a smaller community — not simply someone trying to find a cheaper house outside Ottawa.
