Find the right school by address, understand transportation and know what to do before your family arrives.

When families relocate to Ottawa, schools are often one of the first—and most stressful—parts of the move. Which school serves the address? Is French immersion available? Will your child be eligible for a bus? Can you register before possession?

Ottawa families may also consider private, independent, Montessori, alternative and specialized programs. Admission, tuition, transportation and application dates differ, so those should be researched directly with the school.

How school catchments work

A designated or “home” school is normally determined by the residential address, grade, language, school board and program. Two children living at the same address may have different designated schools because they are in different grades or programs.

  • Search using the complete address and postal code.

  • Choose the correct grade and program—including English, French immersion or French-language education.

  • Check for option areas, program boundaries, new-school phasing and proposed boundary changes.

  • Contact the school or board for official confirmation before relying on the result.

Boundaries and programs can change, and a new street may not appear immediately. Buying within a catchment is not a permanent guarantee that the boundary or program will remain unchanged.

Registering your children when you move to Ottawa

  1. Choose the appropriate board and program. Start with language, public or Catholic education, grade and any learning or accessibility needs.

  2. Find the designated school by address. If you have not closed yet, ask the board what proof of the future Ottawa address it will accept.

  3. Contact the school or newcomer reception office. Families arriving from outside Canada or entering an English-language school for the first time may be directed to a reception or assessment centre.

  4. Gather the requested documents. Boards may ask for proof of the child’s age, parent or guardian identity, Ottawa address, immigration or citizenship status where applicable, previous school records and immunization information. Confirm the current list directly with the board.

  5. Discuss placement and support. Share report cards, Individual Education Plans, language needs and other information that helps the school prepare.

  6. Confirm transportation separately. School registration does not automatically mean bus eligibility.

Will there be a school bus?

For the OCDSB and OCSB, the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) manages home-to-school transportation. Its address tool can provide an initial eligibility check. Current published distance guidelines are 0.8 km or more for Kindergarten, 1.6 km or more for Grades 1–8 and 3.2 km or more for Grades 9–12, subject to the authority’s rules and measurement.

French public and French Catholic transportation is administered through the Consortium de transport scolaire d’Ottawa.

Transportation can depend on the designated school, program, distance, grade and current route capacity. Out-of-boundary attendance may leave transportation to the parent. The transportation authority has the final word.

What does a school score actually tell you?

Parents naturally ask which Ottawa schools are “best.” There is no single honest ranking that captures teaching quality, school culture, student support, programs, belonging and whether a particular child will thrive.

  • Which school and program serve this exact address today?

  • Does the program continue at the same school through the next grade?

  • What middle or secondary school does the pathway feed into?

  • Is before-and-after-school care available, and is there a wait-list?

  • Would my child qualify for transportation, and from approximately where?

  • Are there proposed boundary changes or a new school planned nearby?

  • What supports are available for language learning, accessibility or an IEP?

  • How will the school location affect both parents’ daily commute and childcare?
