Ottawa schools: start with the address

Moving with children? Before you choose a home, check three things: the school that serves the address, the program your child needs and the daily trip to school. A nearby school is not always the designated one.

1. Choose the board and program. Start with your child’s grade, language of instruction and the program you want to investigate.

2. Look up the complete property address. Use the board tools below. Check each child separately if their grades or programs differ.

3. Check the school journey. Confirm transportation, childcare and the route alongside your own commute before deciding the location works.

Find your school board

Ottawa has four publicly funded boards. French immersion in an English-language board and education through a French-language board are different options. Ask the board about program availability and admission requirements.

For private, independent, Montessori or other specialized schools, confirm admission, tuition, transportation and application dates directly with the school.

Which board can your child attend?

Ottawa has four publicly funded school boards, and they are not interchangeable. The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) is the English public board; admission and any required immigration-document review must be confirmed with the board. The Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) is the English Catholic board. It welcomes children of all religions, and its registration page sets out its own admission process, so check there rather than assuming Catholic status is required.

The two French-language boards, the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario (CEPEO) and the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE), serve French-language rights holders and apply their own admission criteria. Families who do not meet the language-rights criteria can ask about the board’s admission-committee process.

Eligibility comes before catchments: confirm the board first, then check the designated school for your exact address, intended school year, grade and program using that board’s official school finder. A finder result alone does not confirm admission to a particular program.

Before you rely on a catchment result

Check the exact address, grade and program, not just the neighbourhood or the nearest school on a map. Two children at one address can have different designated schools.

• Ask about program boundaries, option areas and any planned changes.

• If a new street is missing from the locator, contact the board.

• If a particular school is central to your move, get confirmation from the board before relying on a listing description.

A catchment result reflects current arrangements. It does not guarantee that boundaries or programs will stay the same throughout your child’s schooling.

When to register, including before you move

Kindergarten registration with Ottawa boards generally opens in the winter months for the following September, and other programs have their own registration windows. Boards also register students through the year for families arriving mid-year. Dates change annually, so check your board’s current registration information: OCDSB, OCSB, CEPEO or CECCE.

If you are registering before you move, ask the board what it will accept as proof of your future Ottawa address, and confirm before you rely on a start date. Transportation is a separate check through the relevant authority: OSTA’s address-based eligibility tool or the Consortium de transport scolaire d’Ottawa (CTSO).

Request the current document checklist. It may include proof of age, identity, address, previous school records and other information relevant to registration. Ask about language assessment or newcomer reception where appropriate.

Discuss any learning, accessibility or transition support directly with the school. Keep sensitive records between your family and the appropriate school staff; you do not need to send them to me.

A worked example (hypothetical)

A family, call them the Patels, is relocating to Ottawa and is considering a home in Kanata, with one child entering Grade 1 and one starting kindergarten. Their check, in order:

1. Board: they choose the English public board, the OCDSB, and confirm the family’s admission requirements.

2. Finder: they select the intended school year and enter the exact address of the home they are considering into the board’s school finder, separately for each child, because grade and program matter.

3. Program: they confirm both the designated school and each child’s eligibility for the intended program and entry grade; a finder result alone does not confirm admission. The board’s current French Immersion entry rules are a separate check.

4. Transportation: they check bus eligibility for that address with OSTA instead of assuming the distance qualifies.

5. Confirm: before firming up the purchase, they contact the board to confirm the assignment and program eligibility for the intended school start date.

The home next door can produce a different answer, which is why this check runs on the exact address, every time. This example is illustrative; it does not describe a real family’s school assignment.

Will your child qualify for a bus?

School registration and transportation eligibility are separate checks. Distance, grade, designated school, program and the authority’s current rules can affect the answer. Do not estimate eligibility from a map or assume attending outside the boundary includes transportation.

Confirm the result with the transportation authority, including current arrangements and any exceptions that apply to your child.

Look beyond a school score

Test results and rankings are one part of the picture. They do not tell you everything about teaching, school culture, support or how your child will settle in.

Compare the program pathway, childcare availability, student support and the daily routine. Fraser Institute comparisons are a third-party reference, not a guarantee of school quality or future results.

Five questions to ask before choosing a home

1. Which school and program serve this address for my child’s grade?

2. Where does that program lead in the next grades?

3. Is before-and-after-school care available, and is there a wait-list?

4. What transportation is available, and what would our morning routine look like?

5. Are boundary changes, capacity issues or a new school relevant to this address?

Your school-and-address checklist

Use one copy for each property you’re seriously considering. Save these notes on your phone or bring them to a showing. A check means you have an answer from the right source—not just that you found a school nearby.

• Property: full street address, unit number if applicable and approximate move date.

• School: board, designated school, grade and intended program checked for this exact address.

• Confirmation: date checked, official page or board contact, and any placement or boundary question still open.

• Registration: documents and timing confirmed with the board, including what you can do before moving.

• Getting there: bus eligibility checked separately; walking, transit or driving route considered.

• Childcare: before-and-after-school options, hours and availability checked if needed.

• Daily fit: school drop-off, your work commute and the return trip considered together.

Before you choose the home: write down what is confirmed, what still needs an answer and who will confirm it. Keep children’s names and personal records out of any notes you send me.
